Nerds Candies

I had also read that Nerds contain carmine on a website forum, this I found to be correct. I received the following response from a consumer response representative at Nestle:

"Thank you for contacting Wonka® Nerds®.

Carmine is a coloring agent extracted from the female cochineal insect. The insects are collected from prickly pear cactus plants primarily in South America and Europe.

Carmine is approved for use in foods, drugs and cosmetics by the FDA. The extracted coloring is highly purified and is free of all insect ingredients; it contains no physical parts of the insect. When used in a product, Nestle labels it as "carmine color". Some of the Wonka® Nerds® will have “carmine color” listed as an ingredient.

I would like to assure you that the only animal-derived ingredients used in our candy products are milk, eggs, and gelatin. The gelatin is used in our Gummy SweeTARTS and Nerds Rope. All of our other ingredients are either from a vegetable-derived source or are created synthetically."
