Planter's Dry Roasted Peanuts

Special thanks to our Go Eggless reader Hina for telling us about the gelatin in Planter's Dry Roasted Peanuts. Planter's appears to be owned by the company Kraft Foods. I went to the Kraft website and found the following information:

Planters - Peanuts - Dry Roasted
Ingredients: peanuts, salt, sugar, constarch, monosodium glutamate(flavor enhancer), gelatin, corn syrup solids, dried yeast, paprika, onion and garlic powders, spices, natural flavor.
Size: 14 OZ
Upc: 2900001173

Not all the Planter's products have gelatin, but the regular Dry Roasted Peanuts are shown to have them for sure. I wrote to Kraft to confirm the source of the gelatin, and the associate director of Consumer Relations responded with the following:

"Gelatin is made from collagen, a protein that comes from animals used for food, like beef or pork. The majority of gelatin used in our products is derived from North American pork. The very small amount of beef used to make our gelatin is primarily from the United States, as well as from several other countries in North and South America, specifically, Canada and Brazil.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) carefully supervises the production of gelatin. During the production process, gelatin changes chemically so that the final product is not the same in composition or identity as it was in the original protein form. Because of this, gelatin isn't considered a meat by the United States Government.

The exact source of the gelatin we use cannot be determined, since hides are used from both beef and pork sources."
